How Mammals Acquire and Distribute Iron Needed for Oxygen-Based Metabolism

چکیده
PLoS Biology | http://biology.plosjournals.org Virtually all cells and organisms require iron to perform basic cellular processes. In respiration, iron proteins capture energy released from oxidation of food by synthesizing high-energy compounds, such as NADH, that are used to fuel cellular metabolism. Iron also enables hemoglobin in red blood cells to bind and transport oxygen to tissues throughout the body. Since iron is indispensable for respiration and oxygen transport, it is not surprising that cellular acquisition of iron has not been left to chance. It can be a challenge for organisms to obtain sufficient iron because much environmental iron is very insoluble. Thus, elaborate systems for uptake of Primer

Steap proteins: implications for iron and copper metabolism.
Erythroid cells of the bone marrow, the most avid consumers of iron in the body, acquire ferric (Fe3+) iron exclusively via the transferrin cycling pathway. A long-standing fundamental molecular question of how ferric iron is handled in this pathway has been recently resolved by the identification of Steap3 (sixtransmembrane epithelial antigen of the prostate 3) as an endosomal ferrireductase n...
متن کاملBrain iron metabolism.
Brain iron uptake is regulated by the expression of transferrin receptor 1 in endothelial cells of the blood-brain barrier. Transferrin-bound iron in the systemic circulation is endocytosed by brain endothelial cells, and elemental iron is released to brain interstitial fluid, likely by the iron exporter, ferroportin. Transferrin synthesized by oligodendrocytes in the brain binds much of the ir...

Along with other nutrients, animals need trace metals to function. Iron, the oxygenbinding component in the blood pigment hemoglobin, is a critical trace metal and is usually absorbed through the gut. Mammals can alter iron metabolism in order to meet oxygen demand during periods of low environmental oxygen – hypoxia. However, it was unknown whether hagfish – a much more primitive group of anim...

متن کاملMobilization of Stored Iron in Mammals: A Review
From the nutritional standpoint, several aspects of the biochemistry and physiology of iron are unique. In stark contrast to most other elements, most of the iron in mammals is in the blood attached to red blood cell hemoglobin and transporting oxygen to cells for oxidative phosphorylation and other purposes. Controlled and uncontrolled blood loss thus has a major impact on iron availability. A...
